What is it?

Mediasite is the University's centrally supported lecture capture platform. Mediasite allows the creation, editing, publishing (via Blackboard) and management of Rich Media content. At Bristol the software has been deployed for two kinds of capture.

Firstly automated capture of Lectures through a phased deployment of equipment to 75 teaching rooms throughout the University. This phase of the project was managed by the Strategic Projects office. From January 2017 the project closed and management of the service passed to the TELED Team in partnership with IT Services and Learning Facilities Management.

Staff will be able to edit and control the visibility of these recordings through their My Mediasite space or if they wish allow the process to complete automatically.

Secondly desktop screen capture software which can be used to record anything you can see on your screen with corresponding audio and, if chosen, video from a webcam. The software then automatically adds this to the lecturers My Mediasite area which allows them to edit, publish and share the recording. However created, once the recording is available to students the creator can access analytics on how the video is being used by their students, for example how much of the video they are watching, which areas they focus on and the number of views.


Why use it?

  • to record information to make available to students prior to the lecture. This practice is commonly termed Flipping. These resources can be reused across courses and/or academic years.
  • to provide clarification to students post lecture or seminar
  • to create Rich Media content for incorporation in to online learning materials using tools such as exe or Blackboard Learning modules.
  • providing feedback to students, using a combination of audio and annotation captured using the desktop software high quality personal feedback can be produced.
