Summary: Naming conventions for website sections, content blocks and folders.

URL naming convention

  • keep it short;
  • make it as meaningful as possible;
  • use lowercase;
  • multiple words should be separated using hyphens (not underscores);
  • do not use spaces or special characters;
  • use meaningful words, eg use 'undergraduate' rather than an abbreviations such as 'ugrad' or ‘ug’.

T4 Site Manager instructions

Section names

In T4 Site Manager, the section ‘Name’ field is what will appear in the left navigation (eg ‘Courses and programmes’). These should always be written sentence case (ie not ‘Courses And Programmes’).

By default, the web address for the section will automatically use the section name, in lowercase with hyphens separating multiple words. So a ‘Courses and programmes’ section within the School of Biochemistry would by default have the web address: bristol.ac.uk/biochemistry/courses-and-programmes.

However, you can override the default web address for the section by specifying it in the ‘Output URI’ field. In the above example, the School of Biochemistry have specified ‘study’ so the section has the web address: bristol.ac.uk/biochemistry/study.

Note, you can only specify the part of the address relating to the section you are in.

When specifying the Output URI, follow the URL naming convention above.

Content-block names

The content ‘Name’ field should use the format ‘Section name - main content’, eg ‘Courses and programmes - main content’.

The content ‘Title’ field is the main page title at the top of the page and should usually be the same as the Section name (eg ‘Courses and programmes’).

Plone

Folders

When naming a folder, page or file in Plone, follow the URL naming convention above.

When creating a folder it will automatically be given an index.html page. Any other page you add to the folder must include the page name and .html extension (eg 'new-page.html').

Website structure

Ideally, you should decide T4 Site Manager section names or Plone folder names at the planning stage. Find out more about planning and structuring your website.
