About BSc Mathematics

Whether you enjoy reasoning through subtle ideas in abstract mathematics, or discovering new applications of maths to more practical areas, this course provides you with core mathematical skills that will equip you for a variety of careers and give a strong basis for further study. Some units, such as Financial Risk Management or Maths in Schools, are aimed at specific career paths, while units such as Modern Mathematical Biology or Introduction to Queuing Networks allow the study of topics that reflect our exciting research base.

Course structure

Year one consists of compulsory topics, covered in lectures, small-group tutorials and working through exercises independently and with peers, as well as freedom to investigate a range of topics in collaboration with your personal tutor and fellow students. 

In your second and third year you can start to choose some topics that are of particular interest to you, meaning you can continue with a varied degree or choose to specialise.  After year one you can vary your degree with a choice of units outside mathematics. 

After your first year, support for your studies continues in the form of drop-in sessions with lecturers, exercise and feedback classes and student-led Maths Cafés. 

As you move through the course you will gain academic independence, with flexible opportunities for project work.

Access to HE Diploma offerPass Access to HE Diploma (Engineering, Engineering Science, Maths and Engineering, Science, or Science and Engineering) with 30 credits at Distinction and 15 credits at Merit. At least 15 graded level 3 credits at Distinction in Mathematics although more is recommended. The Mathematics units taken should include study of calculus, algebra and trigonometry. The University may require additional evidence of Maths ability such as A-level Maths; for more information, please contact Admissions with full details of the units taken.
BTEC offer D*D*D in Applied Science or Engineering plus A*A* in A-level Mathematics and another mathematics-related A-level subject; or D*DD plus A* in A-level Mathematics and A in A-level Further Mathematics
