About BEng Mechanical and Electrical Engineering

Students will study subjects in both the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering departments as well as additional, programme specific units that provide the tools needed to fully integrate both disciplines. For example a typical graduate would understand and be able to model:

  • a complete powertrain of a future electric vehicle, from the energy storage system through to the electric motors and then to the mechanical drivetrain and traction system.
  • the electrodynamic actuators used in the more electric aircraft, from the demands on the aircraft power system through to the dynamic loads on the flight surface
  • the power flow of a renewable energy application, from the wind, though the electric generator and the power network, to the user in the home.

Years one and two offer a grounding in mathematics, computing, analogue and digital electronics, dynamics and control, electrical energy technologies, and thermal management.

In the third year students will choose from a range of option courses and engage in a significant individual design project, allowing them to focus on anything from electrical power systems to efficient, clean propulsion technologies.
