About MSci Biochemistry with Molecular Biology and Biotechnology

The centrepiece of the Biochemistry MSci is an extended research project that allows you to develop in-depth expertise in your area of specialism and acquire the skills required to embark on a research career. Like our related BSc programme, the MSci programme covers all the major aspects of biochemistry, with an emphasis on cutting edge research.

The first two years of the MSci are identical to the BSc. In year one, you will study biochemistry and biological chemistry, and choose from a wide selection of optional units. As a second year student you will study biochemistry, molecular genetics, and another unit of your choice. You will also receive training in transferable and employability skills.

In your third year you will learn about a range of advanced topics in biochemistry and cell biology, and participate in a laboratory-based research training unit where you will develop the skills needed to define and solve research problems. This prepares you for a research-intensive fourth year, where you will spend up to 16 weeks on an individual research project under the supervision of one of our research group leaders.

A “Science and Society” unit will help you understand the context in which scientific research is undertaken, and you will complete your studies by choosing two advanced options including Synthetic Biology, with Protein Assemblies and Molecular Machines or Cell Biology of Development and Disease.

Course structure

First year

  • Biochemistry 1: Cellular composition plus Cellular processes
  • Biological Chemistry
  • Optional units, usually chosen from:
    • Anatomical Science
    • Microbiology
    • Normal and Tumour Cells
    • Disease and Defence
    • Pharmacology
    • Physiology

Second year

  • Biochemistry 2: Macromolecular Structure, Dynamics and Function plus Molecular Cell Biology
  • Molecular Genetics: Recombinant DNA Technology plus Gene Expression and Rearrangement
  • Biomedical Research, Employability and Enterprise Skills
  • One optional unit, usually chosen from:
    • Cellular and Molecular Pathology
    • Infection and Immunity
    • Mathematics
    • Pharmacology
    • Neurophysiology
    • Other subjects, such as language units, may also be taken with the agreement of the School.

Third year

You will cover a wide range of topics at an advanced level, with the emphasis on current developments. You will study the following lecture-based units:

  • Advanced Cell Biology
  • The Dynamic Proteome
  • Cellular Information
  • Advanced Options in Biochemistry.

You will also take the "Research and Communication Skills" unit which includes a literature project, and the "Research Training" unit where you will gain experience of advanced experimental work in a supervised laboratory environment.

Fourth year

You will spend up to 16 weeks on an individual research project under the supervision of one of our research group leaders. This will allow you to develop expertise in your topic and grow as an independent researcher. You will also take a "Science in Society" unit, and choose 2 options from:

  • Synthetic Biology

with either

  • Cell Biology of Development and Disease

or

  • Protein Assemblies and Molecular Machines

BTEC DDD in Applied Science plus A-level grade A in Chemistry
SQASH: AAAAB including Chemistry and at least one other science subject or Mathematics, and AH: AA in Chemistry and another science subject or Mathematics
Welsh BaccRequirements are as for A-levels where you can substitute the same non-subject specific grade for the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Level Core grade
EB85% overall with 8.5 in Chemistry and 8.5 in one other science or Mathematics

In England, where numerical GCSE grades will start to replace letter GCSE grades, we will be aligning the two grading schemes as follows: 4 or 5 is C, 6 is B, 7 is A, and 8 or 9 is A*
