About BSc Biochemistry with Molecular Biology and Biotechnology

This degree is similar to BSc Biochemistry but it gives you a choice of units that bias your study towards areas relevant to biotechnology and molecular biology. The topics offered allow you to choose your specialism while developing your knowledge and research skills.

In addition to the core lectures and project work in the final year, you have the opportunity to study specialist aspects of biochemistry, such as synthetic biology and protein science in therapy and technology.

First year

  • Biochemistry 1
  • Biological Chemistry
  • Microbiology and Pathology

Second year

  • Biochemistry 2: Macromolecular Structure, Dynamics and Function plus Molecular Cell Biology
  • Molecular Genetics 2: Recombinant DNA Technology plus Gene Expression and Rearrangement
  • Biomedical Research, Employability and Enterprise Skills
  • Cellular and Molecular Pathology or Infection and Immunity

Third year

You will cover a wide range of topics at an advanced level, with the emphasis on current developments. You will study the following lecture-based units:

  • Advanced Cell Biology
  • The Dynamic Proteome
  • Cellular Information
  • Advanced Options in Biochemistry.

You will also study the Core Skills unit which includes two pieces of independent project work: the practical project and the literary project.

Higher Mathematics is recommended, and is required for those without GCSE Mathematics at A or A*.

Subjects required at GCSE or equivalentGrade A in Mathematics or Grade C in AS level Mathematics or Physics, plus C in English language. In England, where numerical GCSE grades will start to replace letter GCSE grades, we will be aligning the two grading schemes as follows: 4 or 5 is C, 6 is B, 7 is A, and 8 or 9 is A*.
