Sick notes

sickness page image of walking sticksMost people will have some illness during their time at university and this illness may affect your studies. You should always inform your department if you are having any problems with your course and come to see us to discuss medical problems. This page aims to explain the rules about certifying illness.

Illness which results in your absence from university or prevents you from meeting a deadline for a period of 7 days or less does not require a Doctor's note. This same rule also applies to Med3 certificates where you are absent from work for 7 days or less.

You will need to complete and submit a self certification form. University self certification forms are available from your department, those for work can be obtained from your employer.

You should inform your department or employer as soon as possible if you are ill. On your return you can then complete the self-certification statement.

You don't need a doctor's note to self-certify.

Illness which causes repeated short-term absence may prompt your department to request that you have a medical review and obtain a letter from a doctor.

Exams

This is very important. If you cannot attend an exam for medical reasons then you must be seen or discuss this with a doctor on the day of the exam. We will try and sort out the medical problem for you but if it does result in your absence from an exam we can write a note to explain this to your department.

If you are unwell for seven days or less in the run up to an exam but are well enough to attend on the day then you should submit a self certification form as above. Use this system if you feel that the illness may have impaired your exam preparation. The same applies in the run-up to a deadline when you may need an extension.

After seven days...

For medical problems which prevent your attendance or ability to meet a deadline for more than seven consecutive days you will need a statement from a doctor. Please come in to discuss management of the medical problem and we will write a letter for your department or employer.

University departments are usually very accommodating if they are kept up to date and well informed. If you have any health problems which are affecting your work or your attendance then please speak to us and inform your department.
