Sexual health and contraception

You can see a nurse prescriber in a routine appointment to get advice and prescriptions for contraception.

If you are considering a coil (IUD/Intrauterine Device) then you should make a pre-fit counselling appointment with Dr Goodfellow, Dr Grant, Dr Mobbs, Dr Percival or Dr Murray.

If you are considering a contraceptive implant (Implanon) you should make a pre-fit counselling appointment with Dr Mobbs, Dr Grant, Dr Percival, Dr Murray, Nurse Morle or Nurse Windatt.

If you need Emergency Contraception (missed pill, split condom etc) then it is important you are seen as soon as possible as it is more effective if taken within 24 hours. Nurses usually issue emergency contraception. Please let Reception staff know that you need to be seen the same day/urgently. Alternatively, you can also purchase the emergency contraceptive pill over the counter from your local pharmacy.

Sexual Health

The Students’ Health Service is unusual for a General Practice in that we offer a specialist sexual health service. We can test for a wide range of sexually transmitted disease including (but not limited to) chlamydia, gonnorhoea, hepatitis and HIV. We are happy to do testing even if you have no symptoms but feel that you have been at risk.

There are 3 types of sexual health appointment – symptomatic, asymptomatic (ie you do not have any symptoms but feel that you may have been at risk) and a NAATS test appointment, which tests for chlamydia and gonorrhoea. The information below is designed to help you assess which type of appointment is most appropriate to your needs.

Do you have any of the following symptoms?

Women

Men

If the answer to these questions is no we can offer you an appointment with a Healthcare Assistant who will explain to you how to take urine or vaginal samples for testing. The testing is for chlamydia and gonorrhoea only. As this is a 5 minute appointment, if you arrive late you will not be seen.

If you answer yes, you will be offered an appointment with the nurse or duty doctor as appropriate.

Do any of the following risk factors apply to you?

If any of the above apply, you will be offered an appointment in the Sexual Heath Clinic which will include a full sexual health risk assessment, including blood testing if necessary.
