If you have diabetes you can be seen by a diabetes specialist nurse and consultant. The visiting specialist team is Professor Polly Bingley and DSN’s Helen John, Lis Jones and Gayle Richards. The diabetes team visit Bristol University Students' Health Service and work very closely with the doctors and nurses here.
We are keen to support you during term time and you are encouraged to make an appointment for the clinic even if you are seen regularly in your home diabetes clinic. If you wish to transfer your diabetes care to this clinic you can also do that.
The diabetes specialists can offer help with
- Problematic hypo’s
- Managing blood sugar levels in exercise / activity
- Managing illness
- Impact of student life on your diabetes
If you transfer your care to Bristol you will have an annual review when it is due in the year. If you continue with your care in your home town we will still issue prescriptions, do blood tests and give advice and support.
The Diabetes Specialist Nurses offer phone and email advice at any time (including holidays) and are very happy to be contacted if you need any help. DSN’s can be contacted at any time add between 8.30 and 5 Monday to Friday. Their phone number is 0117 342 2892
You will have an opportunity to meet the team at some point in your first term when you will be offered an appointment for the joint diabetes clinic held at here at Student Health.
