Elective workshop options
The following sessions will run concurrently. You will be asked to rank your preferred choices at the booking stage.
-
1. Navigating your network: removing boundaries for effective connections - Emmanuel Gobillot
To lead effectively across boundaries requires a deep understanding of the social connections that underpin our formal objectives. In this interactive session, Emmanuel will introduce participants to a way of assessing the extent and the strength of the connections they need to deliver results as well as help them think through ways of increasing the effectiveness of these connections. This practical approach will help you to develop a sense of purpose to your relationship-building, and overcome boundaries in enhancing your network. Read about Emmanuel Gobillot.

2. Your inner boundaries as a leader: own them and overcome them - Laura Brammar
So much of leadership is outward-facing, whether it’s dealing with external environments, addressing wider agendas or working with other colleagues. But what about the inward-facing aspects of your leadership? Which internal narratives do you tell yourself about your development as a leader? Which inner boundaries have you erected around your leadership potential? In this interactive session we will explore the following topics and generate practical solutions which you can take back to your workplace: Self-limiting beliefs – which patterns of behaviour are holding you back? Imposter syndrome – how are your doubts affecting your performance at work? Self-confidence – what needs to change for you to be more assertive? Resilience – how can you make yourself more anti-fragile going forward? Read about Laura Brammar.

3. Challenging our cultural assumptions - Marie-Annick Gournet
Leading across boundaries in an organisation like UoB requires effective communication and collaboration with people from diverse cultural backgrounds; however we are not always aware of our own cultural conditioning and its effect on how we communicate. This interactive session will begin to challenge assumptions and start a process of reflection to inform practice and cultivate an inclusive organisational culture. In this session, Marie-Annick will encourage you to develop a greater awareness of your own cultural identity and the unconscious cultural values, assumptions and attitudes that influence your interactions with others. She will also help you to understand the social nature of racial, ethnic and cultural differences between and among diverse groups, and their effects on communication. Read about Marie-Annick Gournet.

4. Sharing stories of leadership across boundaries: a story telling workshop - James Norman
Every year, in the Engineering for International Development unit, James tells his students his ‘this is why I teach’ story - what gets him out of bed every day and why he is so excited to be teaching at UoB. The ability to tell our story is important as it encourages others to reflect on their own journeys, motivations, and the boundaries they must navigate along the way. Crucially, as leaders, telling our stories challenges us to be authentic. In this workshop there will be space for you to reflect on your own leadership, write your own story and share it with others in a supportive and inspiring environment. Read about James Norman.
-
5. Beyond your boundaries: building partnerships and collaboration - Dick Penny
In this interactive workshop, Dick will explore the impact that individual leadership approaches can have in delivering UoB’s strategic aims to become a civic university at the heart of its local community. Drawing on his experience of building collaborations and partnerships at the intersection of art and technology, community and commerce across Bristol, Dick will encourage participants to reflect on their own experiences of collaborating and connecting across boundaries, focusing on how individuals can forge powerful partnerships that make a difference within and beyond our own immediate environment. Read about Dick Penny.
-
6. Breaking boundaries: leadership through a female lens - Jane Probert
The workshop will reflect on Jane's leadership journey in the Gloucestershire Police force, which is, without doubt, a male-dominated environment. She will identify key moments of boundaries and breakthroughs and touch upon self-awareness, unconscious bias and dealing with conflict. She will explore why remaining authentic has helped her to feel empowered, to achieve influence and break boundaries. She will help participants to explore their own breakthrough moments and how they can remain authentic. Read about Jane Probert.
