What to do if you experience harassment

What to do if you experience harassmentIf you experience behaviour that upsets you or causes you offence, you are encouraged to discuss your concerns informally with a Dignity at Work Adviser.  They will explain your options and help you think through how to approach the problem.

It is generally helpful to tell the person concerned at an early stage that the behaviour is upsetting and unwanted and that it must stop. This may be done face to face or in writing and may involve a third party as a mediator.

You are advised to keep a written record of incidents, including time, date, place, a full description of what happened, the names of individuals concerned and witnesses to the incidents.

Where the above steps have failed, you may wish to refer the matter to your supervisor or line manager,   where appropriate. It may be possible for him or her to speak informally to the other person.  Ultimately, you can make a formal complaint through Personnel Services which will be independently investigated.  For further details see Policy and Procedure on Bullying and Harassment.
