Equivalent or lower qualifications (ELQs)

Due to changes in Government policy, higher education institutions in England will not receive government funding subsidies for teaching Home (UK and EU) students who are studying for an equivalent or lower qualification than they have already gained  (regardless of the awarding institution). Students who fall into this category will be charged a higher, non-subsidised tuition fee.

The University of Bristol will charge higher tuition fees for Home and EU undergraduate students who study on programmes leading to a qualification equivalent to or lower than one they have already been awarded to compensate for the withdrawal of Government funding.

A number of exemptions apply, including:

A full-list of courses which will not be subject to a higher fee for those starting 2009/10 can be found here. Students will be informed after an offer is made if they are subject to higher fees. ELQ students starting courses in 2008/09, or those who were accepted in 2008 for deferred entry in 2009, will pay the previously advertised fees for the duration of their course.

The fees for ELQ students not listed as exempt as of the 2009/10 academic year are as follows:

Course Type

Minimum Fee

Full-time undergraduate courses

£6,000

Veterinary Science (BVSc)

£17,200

Part-time undergraduate courses

£2,400

(Fees are subject to yearly increase)

The University of Bristol reserves the right to charge the higher non-subsidised tuition fee if a student has not fully disclosed his/her highest gained qualification. Students must immediately inform the University of Bristol if they gain an equivalent or higher qualification between the date of application to the University of Bristol and the date of enrolment.

Please note: There will be no differential fee for ELQ students on postgraduate programmes.

*With the exception of Veterinary Science (BVSc), higher fees will still apply
