Dr Clare England

Biography

I qualified as a registered dietitian from the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (now Cardiff Metropolitan) in 2004. I began my research career in 2006, providing dietary advice to patients enrolled in the Early ACTID diet and physical activity intervention for people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. This led directly to my securing a Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship from the NIHR in 2011. I undertook my PhD at the Centre for Exercise, Nutrition and Health Sciences, and developed a brief dietary assessment tool for people with Type 2 diabetes: The UK Diabetes and Diet Questionnaire (available here). Clinically, prior to and during my PhD, I worked as a weight management dietitian for a Tier 2 service, in primary care with a regular diabetes clinic and as a Diabetes Educator for Bristol Community Health. I have also provided dietary advice for people with type 1 diabetes on the EXTOD study investigating the benefits of physical activity for people with type 1 diabetes.

I work within the Type 2 diabetes and the Peri-treatment workstreams within the NIHR Bristol Biomedical Centre (Nutrition Theme). My current research areas are to develop and test a brief intervention aimed at improving the provision of routine dietary advice in primary care to people with type 2 diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance, investigate the potential of food photography to improve dietary assessment, the use of continuous blood glucose monitoring in type 2 diabetes, and investigating the use of low iodine diets prior to radio-iodine ablation for thyroid cancer. I am a committee member for the British Dietetic Association Diabetes Specialist Group and a Scientific Member of the Diabetes UK Long-term self-management & glycaemic control clinical studies group.
