Research on teenage domestic abuse highlighted on BBC's Newsnight

Research into teenage domestic violence by Christine Barter at the School for Policy Studies will be further highlighted tonight, Tuesday 24 April, in a special report by BBC Two's Newsnight.

The research, funding by the NSPCC and Big Lotto fund, shows that 1 in 4 teenage girls under 18 years of age have experienced abuse by their partners and some studies put that figure as high as 40%. The statistics are hard to clarify because currently 'domestic violence' relates to something that happens between adults (over 18 years of age).

Falling between the provision of child protection and domestic abuse services (that cater for adults and even then are scant), there is often a lack of understanding of teenage domestic violence by the police, and teenagers experiencing abuse often get little or no help.

Tonight's programme will use case studies to highlight the research findings, and feature comments from Chief Constable Carmel Napier, the police's national lead of domestic abuse. She said, "We've got an awful lot of work to do in relation to getting police officers to understand that actually young people are in relationships at a much younger age and to understand that this is not acceptable whatever the age."

Christine Barter said, "'We are delighted that Newsnight have highlighted this important child welfare issue. As the film shows teenage girls experiencing violence and abuse from their intimate partners are often left unprotected by both child welfare and domestic violence services. Although the NSPCC research enabled the scale of the problem to be recognised for the first time we now need to ensure that all agencies are responding appropriately to provide the safeguarding services young victims require."
