The launch of the new
Centre for Gender and Violence Research at the School for Policy Studies was celebrated at a conference on 20 January 2010 showcasing key areas of the Centre's work. Chaired by Professor Betsy Stanko, Senior Advisor for Strategic Analysis with the Metropolitan Police, the presentations were based around two major themes: "honour”-based violence research and understanding who does what to whom and where. Members of the Centre spoke on the following:
Professor Gill Hague
The Centre for Gender and Violence Research supercedes and builds on the work and research of the former Violence Against Women Research Group (VAWRG), with a long history of researching violence against women and gender based violence, and feeding this into policy and practice nationally, internationally and at a local level.
Dr Melanie McCarry, Gillian McDonald (PhD student) and Dr Geetanjali Gangoli
Professor Betsy Stanko heads the Strategy, Research and Analysis Unit for the Metropolitan Police, and is Honorary Professor of Criminology, Royal Holloway, University of London. She worked previously in the Cabinet Office, and prior to that, was an academic. Notably she was the Director of the ESRC Violence Research Programme (1997 - 2002).
