New ESRC Large Grant on Poverty and Social Exclusion welcomed by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law

'Poverty and Social Exclusion in the United Kingdom - the 2010 Survey', is the largest grant ever awarded for poverty research in the UK. It is a 42-month research project and
Professor Dave Gordon from the
Centre for the Study of Poverty and Social Justice at the School for Policy Studies will be the principal investigator. Co-applicants include colleagues in the School for Policy Studies (

Dr Demi Patsios,
Dr Sarah Payne and
Dr Simon Pemberton), Sociology (
Professor Ruth Levitas and
Dr Esther Dermott), Norah Fry Research Centre (
Dr Pauline Heslop), as well as researchers from Heriot-Watt University, the National Centre for Social Research, the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency, the Open University, Queen's University Belfast, the University of Glasgow and the University of York.
The research project will build on earlier work from the Faculty including the 1999 Poverty and Social Exclusion Survey (funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation) which established expertise in defining and measuring social exclusion.
On 19 January 2010, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research, Professor Guy Orpen; Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law, Professor Judith Squires; and Professors David Gordon and Ruth Levitas gave presentations about the importance of this research to help improve people's lives. They were joined by 40 guests, staff and graduate students at the Priory Road Complex.
