Dr Michaela Benson
Dr Benson joined the School's Centre for Urban Studies in 2010 to work on the project "The middle classes in the city: Social mix or just ‘people like us’? A comparison of Paris and London". She is a member of the UK team researching the middle classes in London. She has interests in linking social theory to geographic mobility and social class, and is currently tracing the relationship between French and British literature about the middle classes. This new research complements her previous research on the geographic mobility of the British middle classes, soon to be published in her monograph "The British in rural France: Lifestyle migration and the ongoing search for a better way of life". This presents British migration to rural France as a form of lifestyle migration that is particular to the British middle class, while also stressing that residential and lifestyle choices following migration continue to reflect middle class values and ideologies about living.
