The Great Hall, Wills Memorial Building Queens Road Bristol BS8 1RL

Centre for Gender and Violence Research end of academic year conference

The Centre for Gender and Violence Research and the School for Policy Studies are hosting an event to celebrate the work, impact, and influence of the work of Professor Marianne Hester over the last three decades. This symposium celebrates Professor Emerita Hester’s time as Chair in Gender, Violence & International Policy and includes lectures from her colleagues and former students. We will also celebrate the recent publications of several books with the CGVR. The event will conclude with drinks and nibbles.

To see an overview of Professor Hester’s numerous achievements in the field of women’s rights, equality, and violence prevention, take a look at this excerpt from the Springer Encyclopedia of Domestic Violence (2023).

The celebration event will feature talks and reflections on three strands of Professor Hester’s work, namely;

  • Enhancing our understanding of what justice means to victims. Hester led teams working with English and Welsh Women’s Aids on projects related to wider notions of justice for victim-survivors of Gender-Based violence (2015-2018), and on measuring coercive control. Currently, Hester is working with the United Kingdom’s Office for National Statistics to develop a new set of questions and approaches to measuring domestic violence and abuse, with a focus on coercive control.
  • Child survivors of domestic abuse. Including the ‘three planet model’, work on safe child contact in court, and her 2006 book co-authored with Lorraine Radford entitled, ‘Mothering Through Domestic Violence’ which was a foundational text in our understanding of the impact of DVA on children.
  • ‘Who does what to whom’; Advancing understandings of DVA perpetrators. Including her 2013 research on English policing records, a 2015 book with Catherine Donovan which focused on experiences of DVA within LGBT communities, entitled, ‘Domestic Violence and Sexuality: What’s Love Got to Do with It?’. Prof Hester’s role in writing guidance for Articles 12 and 16 of the Istanbul Convention, and evaluations of the DRIVE project. As well as long-standing involvement in projects with the Working with Perpetrators European Network.
