Personal profile

David joined the School in September 2005 having previously been Research Director at the National Children's Bureau and Research Fellow at the Dartington Social Research Unit. David is currently the head of the Centre for Family Policy and Child Welfare.

He is a leading national and international child welfare researcher and is author/co-author of 13 books and numerous other chapters and articles. He began his career as a residential social worker with adolescents. His current research is focusing on an evaluation of the social pedagogy pilot programme in residential children's homes with the DfE; and, in association with the NSPCC, exploitation and violence in teenage dating relationships.

David has been a member of government's Adoption and Permanence 'Taskforce'. He was awarded the OBE in January 2005 for services to children.

Teaching interests

David supervises student dissertations and contributes to the social work qualifying and post-qualifying programmes as well as the Childhood Studies programme.

Research interests

Child and family welfare, foster and residential care for children, children in need, adolescence, educational disadvantage, special education, knowledge-based professional practice, institutional child abuse.
