With an increasingly ageing population, more and more people are living with long-term conditions such as diabetes, heart problems and depression. It is, therefore, important that the NHS explores new ways of providing healthcare for people with long-term conditions.
The Healthlines Study is a five year research project which aims to develop and evaluate a new telehealth service, delivered by NHS Direct, to support long-term health. The study will help identify potential ways to reach out to more people and promote self-care, self-management and greater independence. This will be achieved through five linked research activities:
Now in the programme’s final phase, patients with depression and raised risk of cardiovascular disease are being recruited from GP surgeries surrounding Bristol, Sheffield, and Southampton to the randomised controlled trial. Over a 12-month period, the trial will evaluate how beneficial and cost-effective the new NHS Direct-delivered telehealth service is compared to usual care alone.
