The School of Social and Community Medicine is one of the UK's leading centres for research and teaching in population health sciences. The School was created on 1st August 2010 with the merger of the Departments of Social Medicine and Community Based Medicine. Nearly 400 staff and more than 80 research students are housed in our two buildings, Canynge Hall and Oakfield House.
Research in the School is collaborative and multi-disciplinary, with staff coming from a wide range of academic disciplines and clinical specialties. We aim to tackle key public health and health care issues, within major research centres and programmes. Our world class researchers come from a wide range of academic disciplines and clinical specialties collaborating on key substantive and methodological questions across the population health sciences. The school's global research excellence was recognised in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.
Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes provide training and career development for undergraduate medical students, primary care/psychiatry/public health/paediatric and surgery trainees, other clinicians, and research staff. The postgraduate Short Course programme is a popular source of intensive courses in research methods and skills.
