Year Abroad on Stage
21 December 2015
The first ever Year Abroad on Stage show was put on by the School of Modern Languages on Wednesday 9 December 2015. The brainchild of Emilie Poletto, this new event brought together final year students to showcase the experiences they had whilst on their year abroad. All the students wrote the scripts themselves and members of the language staff acted as their directors.
Sketches ranged from conversations in the bakers, being in love with your Austrian language tandem partner, travelling and singing lessons in Russia to eating out with your host family in Italy. There were also monologues about being tall, having adventures and matters of a serious nature in Latin America.
Subtitles were skilfully provided due to the wide range of languages being spoken, although such was the skill of the actors that subtitles were not necessary to understand the awkwardness of being well over 6ft tall in Latin America or saying the wrong word to your host family in Italy.
The show was a runaway success and no doubt will become a permanent fixture in the School's events calendar. All we can do now is look forward to those students currently on their year abroad bringing back as much fun and laughter as this year's finalists.
