There is a consensus among modern language students that the Italian Department is very friendly and welcoming. Learning a language ab-initio was always going to be a challenge, having to overcome the initial struggle of barely knowing the days of the week or how to ask or answer even the simplest of questions in Italian. Nevertheless, from day one, the Italian Department and its teachers and lecturers have been a great help, and at times even inspiring. The department is small in relation to some others in the University and it can therefore offer greater individual support to its students.

“I cannot believe how much my Italian has improved in just over a year. The small oral classes have really helped to improve my conversational Italian, and the inclusion of Erasmus students in some of the classes is a great way to meet real Italians.

“The Year Abroad is what everyone is looking forward to. I hope to work in Italy next year, something that I’m getting a lot of support with, even though jobs seem relatively scarce in the country in this difficult economic climate.”
