The AFL Spanish section in the School of Modern Languages is lively and busy. We run courses for all levels, from ab initio (beginner)  to Intermediate and advanced. You can take Spanish as an Open Unit or as part of the Study in the Continental Europe Programme, if your wish is to carry on your undergraduate studies in a Spanish University for a whole year. Please note: If you are a native Spanish speaker you are not permitted to study Spanish at the School of Modern Languages.

In the Level 1 units the main focus is on acquiring and developing the main four skills. There is a practical approach to teaching and Spanish is the medium of communication throughout, including in ab initio groups. Therefore students are immersed in the language right from the beginning.

Spanish and Latin American culture and current affairs are part of the syllabus at every level and this has special importance in Levels 2 and 3 where through lively discussions and debates there is ample opportunity for students to learn about and discuss current and topical issues.

During their second year of Spanish, students also have the chance to explore more specific aspects of the language, this time related to their own degree studies, whether Engineering, Chemistry, Maths, Medicine, etc.
