ようこそ!yokoso!
Welcome to the Japanese page of the School of Modern Languages, University of Bristol.
At the School of Modern Languages, we have been offering Japanese classes to students for nearly a decade. Japanese is currently offered to undergraduate students as an Open Unit. Please note: If you are a native Japanese speaker you are not permitted to study Japanese at the School of Modern Languages.
Open units
Open units in Japanese for undergraduate students are available at ab-intio, pre-intermediate and intermediate level. The focus of our courses is on acquiring and developing the four skills in general. The lessons also include cultural aspects. (Please go to Unit information for detailed unit description and how to register for a unit).
Our small team of Japanese tutors are highly motivated and work closely together to produce interesting and challenging resources for all students. All staff are native speakers of Japanese and experienced in teaching Japanese as a foreign language.
Teaching materials donated by the Japan Foundation will be in use to contribute to the lesson content.
In the pages on this site you will find information on all aspects of your Japanese studies at the School of Modern Languages, from timetables to course descriptions. Also check for news about special events, such as a scholarship programme at Aichi Prefecture University (APU), the speech contest and the Japanese programme for our cultural week. Details of registration for 2011/2012 are also available.
If you would like to study independently or need to do some research for your Japanese class, the links on the online resources page should help you.
Here are some comments from previous students;
- A very rewarding and memorable year of studying Japanese. I find it especially stimulating.
- It is a very interesting subject I enjoy the most out of all the subjects.
