Welcome to the Applied Foreign Language French page of the University's School of Modern Languages

The University has been offering French classes to students for more than a decade, either as an open unit or as part of the Study in Continental Europe Programme. We prepare our students for their year abroad, focusing during the first year on French culture and French current affairs, and during the second year on  specific aspects of the language (Science, Engineering and Social Science). Our team of French teachers are highly motivated and work closely together to create challenging and interesting resources for all students. All staff are native speakers and experienced in teaching French as a foreign language.

Please note: If you are a native French speaker you are not permitted to study French at the Language Centre.

Here are some comments made by past students, which might give you a taster of what it is to study French here:

"The course was more general than A-Level, therefore I learnt lots of new vocab. Lots of different media were used to help us learn, e.g. television, radio and newspapers." (Level 1 student)

"I liked the conversations in class. It improved my French and the most important thing for my career is to be able to speak French at a good level."  (Level 1 student)

"the most positive aspect of the course is that is is centred on Engineering subjects. It keeps it interesting and prepares us for our year abroad." (Level 2 student)
