Welcome
The University of Bristol offers a comprehensive range of Applied Foreign Language (AFL) units for specific purposes to a broad base of students from across the University. All units are fully accredited.
From 1 August 2011 these units will be administered and delivered by the School of Modern Languages.

The School of Modern Languages provides tailor-made AFL units for the following programmes:
Study in Continental Europe
A range of language units for General Purposes (Level C) and Specific Purposes (Level I) for students from the Engineering, Science and Social Science faculties who are spending the third year of an undergraduate degree in Europe. All units are fully accredited and worth 20 credit points and are taught over a 23-week period from October to May.
Languages available: French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
Please note: If you are a native speaker of any of the languages on offer you are not permitted to study that language.
Language for Medical Studies
An optional range of language units for students taking a degree in Medicine. These units are optional and taken as student selected components (SSC) in the second year. This language option is only available to students in Stream B. All units are fully accredited and worth 10 credit points. Language for Medical Studies runs for 14 weeks from October to February (week 3-16). It is highly recommended that you take this unit if you are going to take part in a SOCRATES exchange in the third year.
Please note: This language option is not offered to students in Stream A.
Languages available: French, German, and Spanish.

Open units
An optional range of language units for General Purposes (Level C), Specific Purposes (Level I) and Business and Professional Purposes (Level H). All units are available to students from all faculties. All units are fully accredited and worth either 10 or 20 credit points and are taught over an 11 weeks (TB1) or 23 weeks (TB1 and TB2 ) from October to May.
Languages available: French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.
Please note: If you are a native speaker of any of the languages on offer you are not permitted to study that language.
All units are registered in the Open Units Catalogue.
Please note: An Open Unit must be part of a 120-credit point agreed programme of study. The units are not available to students without credit points.
