Research summary

My research is concerned with the history, art, archaeology and architecture of the early medieval period. Most of my publications are concerned with Anglo-Saxon England, but I have also published on links with Ottonian and Salian Germany, and I now have a developing interest in early medieval Italy, especially Rome. I have recently completed a paper on ‘Anglo-Saxon Berkeley: history and topography’ to appear in Anglo-Saxon Studies in History and Archaeology 18, ed. H. Hamerow (forthcoming, 2013). Biography

I developed an interest in the early medieval period while studying French and German at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, from 1965 to 1969. I am now retired and became an honorary research fellow in the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology in 2011. I have been a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries since 1985. In addition to my published work, I have edited the Annual Deerhurst Lecture since 1993.
