MA in Russian History

This programme is designed to deepen understanding of a major power and the mentality of its people through study of its intellectual, political and cultural history and by offering the possibility of approaching source material in the original.

The programme is composed of a taught part with 120 credit points and a dissertation with 60 credit points.

The taught part of the programme is constructed around the following units, of which students must take at least two:

  • RUSSM0001: Russian Thought in the Age of Catherine*
  • RUSSM0002: Dostoevsky and Native-Soil Conservatism*
  • RUSSM0003: Russian Revolutionary Populism 1870-90*
  • RUSSM0010: War on Screen
  • RUSSM0012: Russian Philosophy of the Silver Age

* No more than two of these units will be available in any academic year.

Linguistic training units offered by the Department of Russian Studies

  • Introduction to Russian for Graduates (20 credit points; year-long)
  • Advanced Russian Language (20 credit points; year-long)
  • Literary Translation Studies (10 credit points)
  • ab initio Czech Language (20 credit points; year-long)

Students must also follow two training units: Approaches to History and Research Methods, in the Department of Historical Studies. They may also follow one or two of the optional units on areas outside the field of Russian history that are available within the MA in History offered by the Department of Historical Studies and an optional unit on Russian language, at beginners' or advanced level, within the Department of Russian Studies.

This MA programme is available either as a twelve-month full-time course or over two years part-time.
