Stage gate process
If your research results are suitable for commercialisation through licensing to an existing company or by starting up a new business, our Technology Transfer team will work with you to evaluate the opportunity and to develop and implement a commercialisation plan.
This activity is a project in its own right demanding time, effort and often money. Each commercialisation project is therefore monitored to assess progress and ensure appropriate allocation of resources. This is known as our stage gate process and involves the following steps:
- An initial evaluation is carried out by a member of the Technology Transfer team in conjunction with the academic researcher(s). This involves an initial assessment of the technology, the intellectual property position and the market. The output is a draft recommended commercialisation plan.
- Peer review of the initial commercialisation plan by the Technology Transfer team and a 'go/no-go' decision made. Formal review points set for monitoring the project.
- Development and implementation of the commercialisation plan using internal and external information and resources as required.
- Peer review by the Technology Transfer team at each formal review point and a 'go/no-go' decision made.
