CAPTUM MasterClass: Managing R&D and Innovation
Friday 10 July 2009, 09:00 - 16:00
Møller Centre, Cambridge
Speaker(s): Michael Brand
Graduates entering industry for the first time, or moving to first level supervisory positions, often face unique challenges because their scientific training has not equipped them for management tasks . This MasterClass provides a practical, hands-on, introduction to management issues in R&D and Innovation. It is delivered by consultants with senior level R&D experience and utilises innovative training methods at a standard equivalent to that of leading business schools.
Program
The program is designed around five interconnected modules:
- Commercialising technology: innovation models; role or organisations, teams and individuals in innovation
- Organising for success: characteristics of highly effective teams; task, maintenance and boundary management
- Creative problem solving: lateral thinking, mind mapping, brainstorming; selling ideas
- Protecting intellectual property: methods of protection; practical requirements
- Financial decision making: ROI, expected NPV, Monte Carlo simulation
The modules will be taught by short introductory lecture sessions, followed by small group exercises using case studies and group discussion. People management, communication and decision making skills will be inter-module themes which serve to integrate the structure of the MasterClass.
Participants in the MasterClass will receive printed material relevant to the content of each module, as well as a guide to further study through published material.
