Biogas technology (anaerobic digestion) is common-place in Germany and Austria with thousands of installations on farms and elsewhere. There are very few biogas plants in the UK yet, but this is set to change bringing opportunities for farm diversification, reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, much improved options for waste disposal for both the food and farming industry and the production of renewable energy.
This next event from South West Rural Update will provide information on what's happening in the UK as of December 2008 and will focus on the practical solutions for moving forward.
Cost: Preferential Member's rate: £30.00; Non-members rate £60.00.

SW Rural Update is a new learning network extending across the south west of England. It is a service provided by Universities and Colleges in support of businesses and professionals with an interest in topics relating to rural development. We hope that the network will be of direct interest to rural businesses, consultants, advisors, local authorities, public agencies and the voluntary sector, as well as academic lecturers and researchers.
To date four successful events on waste management and local food have been organised in Gloucestershire and Devon with further events planned in other parts of the region.
Members of the network will be invited to regular one-day seminars on a range of topics. The seminars will include contributions from leading academics in the field, professional practitioners and projects and initiatives with relevant practical experience. Each event will ensure that there is also plenty of opportunity for networking with others in the region. Membership is free; you can register on-line at http://www.southwestruralupdate.org or email srabbich@nationalrural.org
