Short courses for undergraduates

If you think you might have a business idea that may be a commercial success you want to get advice and feedback from people who have a track record of success.  You may also like to compete for a share of a £30,000 prize fund by entering our New Enterprise Competition.  This annual competition is designed to inspire and generate new high-growth businesses and to stimulate entrepreneurial talent.

New Enterprise Seminars - a series of afternoon seminars designed to raise business awareness in general amongst University staff and students, and specifically to help those aiming to enter the New Enterprise Competition.

'SPARK' Summer School:  a four-day intensive course with a £1000 prize.  It's a great opportunity to explore business first hand, develop any business ideas you may have and learn how business really works.  But if you think you're more likely to work for a company, SPARK will give you a real advantage in creating the developing innovative projects and ideas that will get you noticed.  The format will be intensive group-working in a stimulating and motivational environment.

Enterprise Modules/Units: Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Enterprise.  This unit addresses the learning outcomes related to innovation, entrepreneurship and enterprise.  It focuses on entrepreneurial approaches in both small start-up companies as well as larger established organisations.

Another source of help to help develop your business idea and help with your entrepreneurial activities is BASECAMP which was established with the help and financial support from RED.  They offer a substantial package of start-up support including advice, work-space, a seed fund, access to mentors, and their services are free!

The Careers Service is situated in 11 Priory Road and a Careers Adviser is on duty at regular periods throughout the day if you want to talk to someone about your career options.  They hold a series of talks, courses and workshops and their Skills for Success programme includes training on such subjects as time management, negotiation and leadership skills.

The Bristol Enterprise Network (BEN) is the University's facility to assist knowledge transfer among the high-tech, high-growth business community.  The network, which is free to join, brings together regional, national and international organisations from both the commercial and academic arenas.  It provides easy and rapid access to the knowledge, expertise, experience and equipment that is available.  Some of the benefits of membership are the opportunity to network with business people, access to a group of entrepreneurs, interaction with researchers and leading academics, and also sign up to attend a series of training and development opportunities including presentations, lectures, seminars and workshops.

The Shell Technology Enterprise Programme (STEP) is a scheme that matches students with smaller businesses to work on a specific business or technical project for them over an eight week period during the summer vacation.  Students are paid throughout and, at the end of the summer present their project to a panel of judges.  The prizewinner receives a substantial cash prize and a chance to go on to Regional and National competitions.

The National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship (NCGE) is an independent company set up with support from the DFES and DTI to increase economic growth in the UK through graduate entrepreneurship.  It operates in three key areas related to graduate entrepreneurship: research, education and facilitation.
