What is an inaugural lecture?

The What's on guide features inaugural lectures and we are sometimes asked what these are. Inaugural lectures are given by newly-appointed professors. It is an ideal opportunity for new professors to introduce themselves and to present an overview of their own contribution to their field to academic peers, students and research collaborators. It is also an excellent way to present and highlight the latest developments in a discipline to an audience consisting of both members of the University and the wider general public. It can also be a time to celebrate an important personal milestone with family, friends, mentors and colleagues; and for the University to celebrate and showcase the academic achievements of its staff. These lectures are organised by the Public and Ceremonial Events office.
