As scientists, we're sometimes viewed as another species. I'm on a bit of a mission to break down that stereotype by showing that I'm a human being.

What we do

Public engagement is no longer just an added bonus, it is an integral, necessary and enjoyable part of research in the 21st century

Guy Orpen, Pro Vice-Chancellor

The CPE supports and promotes public engagement with research and teaching across the University. This involves running programmes of public talks and festivals, and helping academics to engage with the public by working with them to attract funding, providing appropriate training and facilitating collaboration with partners outside the University. We share ideas about public engagement with other universities through the National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement.

Engaged University Steering Group >

The Engaged University Steering Group sets public engagement strategy at the University. Chaired by a Pro Vice-Chancellor, it brings together the different strands of public engagement and ensures we live up to our aim of being an engaged university.

Established in 2008, the NCCPE is part of the Beacons for Public Engagement initiative, a four-year project to inspire culture change in how universities engage with the public. The NCCPE coordinates a network of six university-based centres or 'beacons' supporting public engagement. It promotes good practice and shares learning between the beacons themselves and the rest of the UK higher education sector.
