Priory Road Lecture Theatre, Priory Road Complex, 12a Priory Road

The Alumni Association is pleased to invite you to attend the 48th Annual Alumni Association lecture on Friday 23rd February 2018. This year we are honoured to be welcoming back our former Chancellor and fellow alumna The Rt Hon The Baroness Hale of Richmond, the new President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. Based on the recent landmark decision by the Supreme Court in Ivey v Genting, Lady Hale will be exploring the concept of dishonesty in law.

Dishonesty is a key concept in many areas of law, but what does it mean? Who is the judge? The most entertaining case in the Supreme Court last year was about a professional gambler who bent the odds playing baccarat at Crockfords and "won" £7.7 million. But did he get it?

Lady Hale’s career has been truly ground-breaking. After a career as an academic at the University of Manchester where she carved out a reputation for herself in the fields of family law and mental health law, Lady Hale became the first woman and youngest person to be appointed to the Law Commission in 1984. In 1994, she was appointed a High Court Judge, the first ever having made their career as an academic and public servant, not a practising barrister. Lady Hale was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 1999 and in 2003 was appointed the first, and only, female Law Lord of the Judicial Committee of the House of Lords.

In 2009, the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom replaced the Judicial Committee of the House of Lords, and until 2013, Lady Hale served as a Justice of the Supreme Court. Lady Hale was appointed Deputy-President of the Supreme Court in 2013 and it was announced in July 2017 that she would become the next President of the Supreme Court - the most senior judicial appointment in the UK. Lady Hale assumed office in September 2017.

We hope that you are able to join us to hear Lady Hale in what promises to be a unique insight to one of the great pioneering legal minds in the world today.
