Background

Sofia studied Probability and Statistics at the University of Lisbon, Portugal, which included an ERASMUS year in the UK. She then completed her PhD at the University of Sheffield, supervised by Professor Ian Dunsmore.

From 2004 to 2007 she worked at the University of Manchester, investigating the quality of randomised controlled trials in subfertility and became an editor and statistician for the Cochrane Menstrual Disorders and Subfertility Group in 2006.

Research

Sofia is currently working with Dr Nicky Welton and Professor Tony Ades, looking at bias, inconsistency and other issues in mixed treatment comparisons meta-analyses.

Other research interests include: quality of reporting of Randomised Controlled Trials; Bias in reported medical research; Evidence Synthesis; Bayesian Methods applied to Medical Statistics; and Subfertility Research.

Teaching

Sofia teaches on the 3 and 5 day Mixed Treatment Comparison and Multi-parameter Evidence Synthesis Courses and on the Systematic Reviews Course organised by the Department of Social Medicine.
