Breakthrough study on early symptoms of ovarian cancer wins RCGP research paper of the year award

A study led by Dr Willie Hamilton which identified the early symptoms of ovarian cancer has won the RCGP Research Paper of the Year Award 2009-2010. Published in the British Medical Journal in 2009, this population based case-control study identified seven symptoms which could help GPs and Practice Nurses with early diagnosis of ovarian cancer.

Commenting on this study, RCGP Chair, Professor Steve Field, said: "I’ve followed Dr Hamilton’s research very closely in this area in recent years and I’m thrilled that the College is presenting him with this award. This is a brilliant academic paper.  It shows academic general practice research at its best.”

The influential study, which has since been used by the Department of Health and cancer charities to raise awareness of the condition, identified seven symptoms in total to help GPs and Practice Nurses with early diagnosis of ovarian cancer.
