Title: 'From Studying Quarks to Beating Cancer: An upbeat story about death and destruction' - Professor Jaap Velthuis

Abstract:

In this lecture I will take you on my journey from building, testing and understanding detectors for particle physics to cancer research. Cutting edge particle physics detector systems turn out to be most useful in radiotherapies and the mechanisms that destroy the detectors are the same as the ones that kill cancer cells. Journey highlights include a now annual stop in Somaliland.
