South West Nuclear Hub welcomes EDF Energy as a member

Following a successful opening in September 2016, the South West Nuclear Hub started welcoming its members. Out of these, in November 2016 EDF Energy joined the South West Nuclear Hub. This is a significant step in the implementation of the Hub’s delivery model, and a testimony to the fact that EDF Energy, the EDF Group and Bristol University have long been strategic partners.

Twenty years ago EDF Energy became one of the main industrial stakeholders heavily involved in the seismic qualification facilities (

Subsequently the Interface Analysis Centre, under Prof Tom Scott’s leadership, started drawing in a lot of interest, and the University’s material science capabilities became well known within EDF Energy.

Adding to that unique expertise in Safety System and Control and Instrumentation through the Safety System Research Centre (SSRC -, a set of core academic capabilities in the fields of structural integrity, non-destructive testing and graphite, Bristol became over the years one out of five strategic universities partners of EDF Energy and EDF Group in the UK.

Aiming at bringing together academia, industry and the whole of the nuclear supply chain, the Hub is to act as the focal point for federating the regional nuclear community together.

Thanks to its unique geographical location, 60 miles from Hinkley Point C, and thanks to a long and established track record of working collaboratively with EDF, the Hub is uniquely placed to address technical challenges faced by the industry, aiming ultimately at delivering:

-        More resilient and cost-effective nuclear.

-        Societal benefits such as “keeping the lights on” for all or ensuring that electricity generation remains sustainable, affordable and safe.

-        Environmental benefits, looking at anticipating better and enhancing the way we deal with nuclear waste.


Together, Professors Tom Scott and David Knowles, co-directors of the South West Nuclear Hub said:

“Having EDF Energy coming on board with the Hub today proves a great support to the delivery of the Hub’s operational model. By working together, in a co-located manner, it will become easier and faster to address technical challenges faced by EDF Energy and other industrial friends today, ultimately leading to a cheaper and safer electricity generation.”

“The University of Bristol is a longstanding partner of EDF Energy. To take only one example, the scale model of a whole graphite core mounted on the shaking table is directly used as part of the safety cases supporting the extension of the life of our Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor fleet. It has recently been awarded by the Institute of Civil Engineers for its innovative character.

Based on these solid foundations, the South-West Nuclear Hub will provide a platform to develop new collaborative projects with the University of Bristol, other academic partners in the area and other industrial partners. The ambition is to deliver value and impact throughout the nuclear lifecycle for a secure, affordable low-carbon energy.”

About the South West Nuclear Hub:

The South West Nuclear Hub provides a focus for nuclear innovation, research and teaching in the south west of the UK. The Hub incorporates the existing collaboration between the Universities of Bristol and Oxford, the Nuclear Research Centre (NRC).

With a dedicated building, opening in summer 2016 at the University of Bristol, the Hub will introduce a step-change across Higher Education in the region to accelerate and grow nuclear research and teaching activities. The Hub will provide a common location for academia, industry and government to come together to meet the opportunities and challenges facing nuclear energy in the UK.
