Teaching Associate (Grade I)


Role Summary

  1. Role holders at this level will normally be responsible, usually under supervision, for straightforward teaching and/or clinical work.
  2. They may provide necessary support teaching such as language training and practice, instruction in basic procedures, assessment, conversion training or study skills support or with appropriate qualifications or experience they may contribute to teaching at higher levels.
  3. They will normally teach on units prepared by other members of academic staff and for which other members of staff retain overall responsibility.
  4. They will be expected to plan their own activity, make a contribution to teaching-related administration and contribute to the review and forward planning of the teaching in which they are engaged.
  5. Role holders will be developing their skills, as lecturers and/or clinicians/professionals.
  6. They will be provided with support and training to help them develop their competencies and the ability to take on a range of wider responsibilities.

Qualifications, skills and experience needed for appointment to Level A

  1. A good honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject.
  2. A relevant postgraduate research degree (or equivalent professional qualification/experience) or be working towards one.
  3. Sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and sufficient knowledge of teaching methods and techniques to work within their own area.
  4. Familiarity with the part of the curriculum to be taught and the scholarship associated with it.
  5. Well-developed analytical skills and the ability to communicate complex information clearly, both orally and in writing.
  6. Potential to stimulate and encourage the commitment to learn in others.
  7. Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and students.
  8. Ability to organise their own time and work, to meet deadlines, and manage competing priorities.
  9. Ability to use initiative, and apply creativity, to solve problems that are encountered in the teaching context.

Responsibilities

  1. Engage effectively with the University’s CREATE scheme or equivalent Teaching and Learning for Health Professionals programme.
  2. Contribute effectively to a teaching programme (or programmes) of the School under the guidance of the Head of School (or Head of Primary Unit or equivalent).
  3. Select and deploy, with advice and support, appropriate teaching, assessment methods and techniques for units taught.
  4. Prepare and deliver lectures within a well-established course, and prepare and lead teaching in small groups, as required, with appropriate support and training, including supervising some formal practical class activities and overseeing the practice of clinical/professional skills as instructed.
  5. Assess students and provide formative feedback to students in a timely fashion and to an appropriate standard.
  6. May supervise dissertations for undergraduate and taught post graduate students within their own specialist field.
  7. Provide effective individual advice/support to students and advise on reading appropriate to the course, level of study and availability of library resources.
  8. Assist other teaching staff with assessments (setting and marking coursework, examinations and other assessment tasks) and the preparation of course materials.
  9. Provide effective pastoral support to a limited number of students, referring them on for further help and/or guidance as necessary.
  10. Deal with problems that may affect the delivery of their own teaching.
  11. Carry out standard well proven clinical techniques and tests, analysing and interpreting the clinical data, with ready access to guidance.
  12. Carry out organisational and administrative tasks directly related to personal teaching and/or clinical/professional work.
  13. Maintain academic standards and academic freedom and work in accordance with University policies (e.g. regarding equal opportunities, ethics, health and safety).
  14. Keep abreast of current literature and research in the subject areas being taught.
  15. Participate in some internal seminars.
  16. Develop their own teaching and/or clinical/professional skills.
  17. Contribute to the successful review and forward planning for the activities in which they are engaged.
  18. Consistently act as a good citizen, actively undertaking administration duties and participating fully in the daily working life of the School.
  19. Undertake relevant training and development activities to develop capacity for taking on wider responsibilities and to support their career development.
  20. Engage effectively in the University’s Staff Review and Development process and develop, with advice, an awareness of their own professional development needs and a personal development strategy, engaging with continuing professional development appropriate to the role.

Relationships and Contacts

  1. Will be managed, advised and assisted, by a more experienced academic member of the School nominated by the Head of School.
  2. Will work closely with colleagues, including demonstrators where applicable and professional services staff.
  3. Will work with, and enthuse, students in classes and in clinics.
  4. May work closely with clients/patients and with other professionals.
