All your ICT problems solved...hopefully.
There is good UoB Wi-Fi networks coverage on all floors except the basement. Please see the Information Services website for more detail on this.
If your PC/laptop is registered in the university systems (Netreg) then it can plug into a wired network socket and connect to any systems that were available in the original department. To achieve this it will automatically take on a new temporary identity (hostname and IP address) whilst on the NSQI network. If the machine has not been registered with the university systems then it will only be able to connect to the wireless network when using your UOB login details.
The Centre's intranet is located here http://www.bris.ac.uk/nsqi-centre/
Please see the Information Services pages for details on the restrictions placed on the university by JANET (Joint Academic NETwork) who supply our connection to the internet.
The university is part of the international eduroam agreement (http://www.eduroam.org/) that allows users from participating academic organizations to log onto the University of Bristol wireless network using credentials from their home organization. Details of exactly how the logon processes is implemented are obtainable from the home organization (it may vary).
Please contact Julie Shackleford (x40005) for information on temporary connection to the internet. Note: this is a low bandwidth connection and so should be used for ‘light’ use only. It will not allow access to network file storage areas or printers.
An NSQI common data storage area for the storage of temporary data is available here:
Windows - \\dfs1\DeptFS\nsqi\NSQI_Common
Apple MAC - smb://is-c2b4x64.cse.bris.ac.uk/vfs16/NSQI_Common
(Mac users, go to finder and press cmd+k to get to the ‘connect to server’ window). Access to these areas is controlled please forward your username to IT services via the Service Desk (https://servicedesk.bristol.ac.uk/) to be allowed access (please indicate if you are using a physics username).
There are three printers in the building, access to which is controlled. Please supply your username to IT services via the Service Desk (https://servicedesk.bristol.ac.uk/) to be included.
Windows - \\is-print2.pcr.bris.ac.uk\NSQI-Printer2
Apple Mac - smb://is-print2.pcr.bris.ac.uk/nsqi-printer2
Windows - \\LS-DeptPrint.services.bris.ac.uk\NSQI-Printer3
Apple Mac - smb://LS-DeptPrint.services.bris.ac.uk/NSQI-Printer3
There is no charge for printing, but all printing is audited for fair use. For windows users the drivers will be offered for installation as part of the add printer process.
Go to add a printer and use the ‘advanced’ menu option, you may need to add this menu option by right clicking on the menu bar and then customise. Add a Windows queue and use the ‘smb’ prefix already present in the queue name field, add a Mac queue name from the printers above.
When printing you will be prompted for a username and password, use the format UOB\username in the username field e.g. UOB\fredblogs, taking care to use uppercase on ‘UOB’. You may wish to store this in you Mac’s Keychain. Note: When printing from Office for the Mac (v12.1.9), don’t use the print button, instead use the menu File> Print (it’s a bug).
If you have OSX10.6 or above the HP printer drivers are already included in OSX, just search for CP3525. If you have a previous version of OSX then use the drivers that can be found on the NSQI common drive in a folder called ‘NSQI Printer Drivers’ or see the HP website.
The drivers can be found on the NSQI common drive in a folder called ‘NSQI Printer Drivers’ or see the Canon website.
There is a Canon A3 colour printer/photocopier on the first floor by the stairwell. Access requires a UoB login name and password. There is no charge for photocopying, but all copying is audited for fair use.
There are two scanners available within the Centre. The first is a simple flatbed scanner with USB connection that can be borrowed from Julie Shackleford (x40005). The second is the Canon A3 colour printer/photocopier, to use:
Windows - \\dfs1\DeptFS\nsqi\NSQI_Common\Scans
Apple MAC - smb://is-c2b4x64.cse.bris.ac.uk/vfs16/NSQI_Common/Scans
We have two seminar rooms (G.05 and the QI Discussion room, 1.02) with standard UoB lecture theatre PC and projectors. The main seminar room also has telephone conferencing and Web conferencing (through JANET). We also have two display screens in the foyer which can reproduce material displayed on the projector in the seminar room.
These are unmanaged rooms and you will, therefore, need to know how to use the equipment yourselves. The building itself is a secure area, locked at all times and only accessible to pre-inducted users. The building is officially staffed from 09:00hrs and if you require the doors to be open for your meeting beforehand, please arrange this in advance with Julie Shackleford (x40005).
There are a number of phones throughout the building available for use. Internal numbers just need the five digit extension number, while outside lines require the prefix '21' to connect. Usage is free, but will be monitored for fair use.
The phones come with a number of advanced features and the instructions are available for download:
