Update following the Fry Building fire
Press release issued: 12 January 2018
Following the fire in our Fry Building on Saturday [6 January], we are working hard to get the project back on track.
The Grade II listed building is being refurbished into a state-of-the-art new home for the School of Mathematics.
It was due to open for the start of the next academic year in September 2018. We’re currently working with the contractor (Balfour Beatty), insurers, loss adjusters and suppliers to ascertain what additional work now needs to be done and what the new timeline will be.
Fire has largely affected the roof and top floor of the South section of the building. This section of the building has been made safe and work has now recommenced in those parts of the building which weren’t affected.
Luckily, no one was in the building at the time and Avon Fire & Rescue Service were able to extinguish the fire relatively quickly to stop it from spreading to nearby buildings. We are very grateful to them for their swift and highly professional response in tackling the blaze.
Our priority now is to ensure the refurbishment project progresses as quickly as possible.
