It’s the most prestigious Guide award and is given to those who have successfully led a number of tasks including community action projects and outdoor pursuits.

Clare, 21, has undertaken a 52-mile bikeathon to raise £200 for Leukaemia Research in addition to becoming an assistant leader of the 54th Clifton Guides.

She also travelled to Canada for six weeks to meet other guides and continued with her work there despite being diagnosed with diabetes.

Clare said: “Guiding has provided me with a lot of confidence in many ways, including working with younger people and with everyday life. It has been a continuous feature in my life. As everything around me is changing it has been a constant that has kept me rooted, in particular it helped with the transition to university.

“While still working towards the award I was diagnosed with diabetes. This was a major setback and had an effect on many areas of my life. Knowing that I was able to carry on and still achieve the award helped me to understand that it will not be a permanent setback and that I can still exceed my own expectations.”

Chief Guide Gill Slocombe said: “Over the years the Queen’s Guide Award has given many young women an amazing sense of empowerment and confidence. I hope they will serve as an inspiration to many more young women all over the country who are thinking about getting involved in guiding.”
