Centre for Higher Education Development Excellence Rankings

3 November 2010

A message from the Vice-Chancellor about a recent series of high rankings for the University.

As I have mentioned previously, we tend not to refer to league tables in either our strategic planning or our external publicity. However, I thought it important to make you aware of our position in the Centre for Higher Education Development’s recent Excellence Rankings.

The CHE’s recently published rankings highlight postgraduate provision in Higher Education establishments across Europe.

The focus of the rankings is at departmental level across the following subjects:  Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Economics, Political Science and Psychology.

Importantly, Bristol is included in all seven, being one of only seven European and one of only four UK universities to achieve this rating of excellence.

The following link shows Bristol’s ranking alongside UK universities as a whole:  http://www.excellenceranking.org/eusid/EUSID?module=Ort&do=show&id=12

And more information with regard to the rankings can be found at:

This follows Bristol’s excellent positioning in three global league tables in August and September when the Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities 2010, which was released on 15 August, placed Bristol 66th in the world top 500 universities; this was followed on 8 September by the QS World University Rankings which placed Bristol 27th; and then the Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings on 16 September which placed us equal 68th.

Notably, this placed Bristol 8th, 7th and 6th respectively alongside other UK Higher Education Institutions.

The consistency of our position in these rankings is testament to the excellence of our staff and students and we should be proud of this well-deserved recognition.
