Careers in sport and fitness

17 February 2010

The Careers Service and the Centre for Sport, Exercise and Health (CSEH) will be running an afternoon dedicated to career options in the sport and fitness sector on Monday 8 March. The event will take place in the University’s indoor Sports Centre on Tyndall Avenue from 12pm to 3pm.

The event is aimed at students and staff who enjoy sport as a pastime but who have not considered it as a possible career path, as well as at students who want to get involved in sport and develop their employability skills, such as leadership, team skills and coaching.

There will be a main exhibition area where visitors can meet contributors with a wide range of sports-related careers, as well as a programme of short talks on how to get into the sector and the qualifications required. Two of the contributors are experienced martial artists who will also be giving what promises to be a memorable demonstration of self-defence and personal safety techniques.

Other participants will include a sports medicine expert, sports development officers, high performance coaches, a sports psychologist, a gym manager, personal trainers and a massage practitioner.

Biographies of the contributors and the programme of talks and demonstrations will soon be available from the Careers Service website. There is no need to book; just turn up on the day. The event co-ordinators are Dr Tracy Johnson (Careers) and Matt Paine (CSEH).
