‘We hope to reduce our emissions over the coming year in a number of ways,’ said Martin Wiles, Head of Sustainability. ‘We’re spending £300,000 this year on insulating our buildings, making heating and lighting systems more efficient and controlling ventilation systems. In addition to this we have a £1.5 million project to reduce overvoltage at the University that will save an estimated £500,000 and should reduce emissions by 8% alone.’

The University’s other commitments in this area include:

• The Green Impact Awards, launched in 2008; 
• a Student Switch-Off campaign in the halls of residence;
• initiatives to help other organizations save energy, including the training of some 40 students and staff to carry out carbon audits for community groups.

The University will also be hosting a training session (already fully booked) for community groups involved with 10:10.
