Described by a competition judge as ‘clear, concise, engaging, witty and thoughtful’, Subtext was launched in 2006 and focuses principally on remarkable people – academic and non-academic – who work at the University.

The Summer 2008 issue of Subtext is now published. The production values and presentation, not to mention the range of features, will also appeal to a more general readership and to anyone curious about the lives and work of academics and support staff at Bristol.

Subtext issue 6 covers an eclectic range of people and subjects, including:

• What biologist Dr Andrew Kennedy found on the planet's coldest, driest, windiest continent;
• How Dr Lesel Dawson charted the cult - and the reality - of lovesickness in 17th-century English literature;
• What archaeologists Dr Nicoletta Momigliano and Dr Tamar Hodos have to say about the lure of the past, the art of diplomacy and the competing demands of fieldwork and family;
• How mathematician Dr Tanniemola Liverpool, while moving from England to Sierra Leone, Germany, France and beyond, has also crossed boundaries of another kind.
