Ann Singleton from the Centre for Poverty and Social Justice in the School for Policy Studies appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on Friday 23 May to discuss the House of Commons Treasury Select Committee report recommendations on migration statistics for local areas.

Ms Singleton warned that the Census should not be linked to an address register, if the contract for running the register was to be given to a US company, or a subsidiary of one. In those circumstances, the provisions of the US Patriot Act would mean that the US government would potentially have access to all our private addresses. This would compromise the quality of data from the next Census and defeat the object of the exercise.
