Three Bristol academics have been honoured in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Elaine Kempson, Professor of Personal Finance and Social Policy Research in the School of Geographical Sciences, has received a CBE for services to the financial services industry.

Frances Heywood, Senior Research Fellow in the School for Policy Studies, has received an OBE for services to housing services for disabled people.

Stephen Wotton, Lecturer in Food Animal Science, has received an MBE for services to animal welfare.

‘I was really surprised and honoured to receive this award,’ he said.  ‘I remain in the dark as to who nominated me, but it must reflect the significant contribution that the Division of Farm Animal Science at Langford Vet School has made to animal welfare around the world. I am part of a group of researchers and trainers who, since 1992, have strived to develop bespoke training courses for the meat industry worldwide that have evolved to meet changing industry and retail requirements over the years. The programmes, sponsored by non-governmental organisations such as the Humane Society International (USA) and the World Society for the Protection of Animals, equip delegates with the skills and knowledge to train their own veterinary inspectorates and industries to improve animal welfare and product quality. It is a vital part of this educational effort that AWTraining remains involved in academic research and, to this end, I am currently involved in applied research projects sponsored by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.’
